Realizing that we haven’t posted on our site for quite some time now – it’s been wonderfully busy – we thought would mention a few things from our recent first-time visit to Buildex Calgary 2018.
While catering mainly to the commercial architecture industry, Buildex is a show that has something to offer for most architectural professionals and industry members alike. Being that it was our first time to the show, we did not know what to expect.
The show is hosted over 2 days in November, and features numerous exhibitors and classroom sessions for learning opportunities, most of which count towards yearly professional continuing education credits. The courses range from numerous business specific practices to creative thinking and design ideas.
A more industry member targetted event than – let say the yearly home shows – Buildex is a much smaller show that can be walked in less than a few hours. The classes, themselves, are 90 minutes each.
We found a few new products and were impressed with iBUILD, Visitor Bay Inc., and WSP. WSP and iBUILD are both local Calgary Companies and we were happy to see local manufacturers and developers thriving. A shout out to the group of Montana companies that had displaysof a great variety of products and services. We also heard some amazing stories from Innovative Fall Protection Inc. as well.
We took one of the courses – Affordable, Accessible and Sustainable Homes – The Trifecta of Housing Security, on the second day. The 3 keynote speakers kept the sem
inar informal like an episode of the View from TV. Elizabeth Hucaluk, Darby Lee Young, and Melanie Ross were all very good speakers – each focusing on a different component of the trifecta. We were impressed with the character of the speakers, and had our eyes opened to the minimum code standards associated with accessibility and its unintended consequences for many.
We would definitely go back next year to take more of the seminars.
